unday 19 May marks the beginning of National Archaeology Week 2013. We'll be be speaking with Winthrop Professor Peter Veth and Dr Alistair Paterson from the University of Western Australia who will be using a $1.17m Australian Research Council Discovery Grant to undertake archaeological investigations on Barrow Island on the Western Australian north west coast, off the Pilbara. Their project researches ‘deep time’ maritime cultures, climate and ecological records over a three year period and will examine 45,000 year old material in caves and rock shelters and on open sites around the island. This significant research has the potential to provide new understanding human behavioural ecology, island biogeography, climate change and historic-era exploitation of this maritime arid zone. We'll also poke around inside the Federal Budget to see what's there or not there for the marine environment, and catch up with Briny Brett Illingworth for the fortnight's dive diary. |

Nearly 60 years ago to the day, in the middle of World War II, the Australian Hospital ship Centaur was 40 miles off Brisbane, heading north to collect wartime casualties at Port Moresby. Despite being clearly painted with the traditional red crosses of a hospital ship on the hull, deck and funnel, a torpedo hit the ship and it sank in less than 4 minutes. What happened next is the subject of a talk called Survival at Sea which will be given by Catherine McCullagh next week at the Shrine of Remembrance. We’ll be speaking with Catherine about this attack so close to the Australian shoreline, and why the sinking of the Centaur was such a significant turning point for Australia in its role in World War II. We'll also bring you all the news (marine and coastal) for the week, some action with Brett (we hope!) and finish off with the final in Anth's three part series exploring ocean acidification and its implications - this time for the deep sea and big oceanographic processes. |

Dr Beach discusses a recent paper that shows that, if left alone from human disturbance, some coral reefs can recover surprisingly quickly after coral bleaching. Plus a sailing report from Capt'n Windshift, and Jeff Maynard's Marinated Movie of the Month. |

Join Anth and Angeline on a whirlwind tour of some of the latest marine and coastal news and views. Angeline has been looking into some of the latest wet and salty news while Anth is going to bring part 2 of his ocean acidification piece (this time temperate waters). We will also enjoy some yummy Sunday morning refried marinara - some oldies from the vaults from last century... Diving in the Arctic with Brenda Konar and training California Sea Otters with Billy Hurley |

Plus a discussion on the ongoing parking and access problems at Bells Beach between large tourist buses and surfers. Hoist the jib, anchor aweigh - we're sailing on board the Lady Marinara. First up, we speak with Steve Howden from Port Melbourne Yacht Club who will tell us all about dinghy racing in Port Phillip Bay, including the upcoming Flying Dutchman Nationals. Then Torre De Roche joins us to talk about her first book Love with a Chance of Drowning, a memoir of her own unexpected experiences as she hit the water for the first time as a novice sailor. Most of us might think about Williamstown to St Kilda as an adventure for a novice sailor. Torre crossed the Pacific. As you do. Bron's just finished reading her book and can't wait for what promises to be a fantastic chat. |

After a quick preview last week, we get the full report back on the The Reef from Bron. Hamer Hall is all its wet grandeur... Anth been looking into Ocean Acidification and some new work into ways to mitigate the impacts on coral reefs. Jeff Maynard comes in for Marine Soundscape and this week ... well... being the first one for the year Jeff just frankly likes to keep the topic a secret... so we don't even know yet! But what we know as well as you is that it will be a beauty! Of course lots of other news and views, maybe some weather, a bit of diving, some great marine music... |
