This time on Along for the Ride, a chat with the 2009 champ of the inaugural Tour de Timor, keeping people safe with Ambulance Victoria's bicycle unit, and the artsiest craziest bikes you ever did see, on display in Northcote! All this, plus events to usher in the joys of summer.
This time we look at the trickier side of riding, whether it's starting, or dealing with a big fall. We speak with Isobel Knowles about her short film I Fell Off My Bike, showing in October at Fed Square as a part of the Next Wave Time Lapse program. Then, it's unicycles at last month's Melbourne Juggling Convention. Finally, a chat about Jika Jika Community Centre's Learning To Ride From Scratch, teaching grown-ups how to ride. Bring out the bandaids and training wheel stories, it's time to get up on your bike!
Special thanks to Isobel for the extra bike sounds from her film, which shows Thursdays in October 5 – 6:30pm, and will be a part of the upcoming Bicycle Film Festival in Melbourne – stay tuned for details!
We're back! This time, to celebrate the arrival of Spring, Along for the Ride talks to Ian Temby at the Department of Sustainability and Environment learns a little bit more about the beauty that is the magpie. Then, it's off to Castlemaine to speak with Paddy O'Sullivan about a progam called Blokes on Bikes. Plus, as always, upcoming events and a little bit of music to listen to as you ride.
And, though Triple R's 2009 Radiothon is over, it's not to late to subscribe and/or pay up your pledges and be eligible for some fantastic prizes! But really, what better prize is there than knowing you've shown your enthusiasm and support for local community radio that brings you great programs like Along for the Ride!
Along For The Ride powers on with the final part of our series focussing on bike share programs around the world with two stories that give an enticing international perspective on public biking. Joining us from Paris for an extensive interview is Eric Britton, one of the world's pre-eminent sustainable transport practitioners and convenor of the innovative New Mobility Agenda. Plus a tale from the Philippines about Padyak, a community-based bike share scheme that oozes good humour and smiles.
Whether you're revelling in Melbourne's winter or trying to escape it, Along For The Ride has a jam-packed program to keep you warm. We delve into the second part of our bike sharing series and learn about the commercially-driven model of public bikeshares from Kathy Lazanas at JC Decaux, the organisation that will be running the bike share scheme in Brisbane. We also talk to the girls from the Victorian Rollerderby League who are living the dream of crash-bang 1970s-style sport on wheels... Fabulous!
Along For The Ride has plenty of fuel to keep your cycling energy high! We embark upon an in-depth examination of bike shares both here and around the world by talking to RMIT and Monash University about their public bike programs. Bringing a touch of sartorial style to the show is Mick Peel, a lecturer on fashion design at RMIT, who has a keen interest in the nexus of cycling and apparel.
First, Damian Watson talks with us about his team of Crohn's Crusaders are taking on the Tour de France route to raise funds for research of Crohn's Disease. Then, Sarah heads to Broadmeadows to find out more about a Work for the Dole program with a focus on bicycles, produced through Workforce Plus. All this, plus strange newsworthy tidbits and event listings on the latest Along for the Ride podcast! What more could you wish for?
We're joined by our special guest, Val , from YarraBUG Radio on 3CR as we have a chat with Michael Hopkins, Executive Director of Policy and Communication for the Victorian Department of Transportation, taking a closer look at the Victorian Cycling Strategy that was released earlier this year. We also have a quick chat about the CommonBike shared bicycle pilot program recently launched by RMIT students.
Keeping bike enthusiasm high for the beginnings of the chilly Autumn weather, we bring you two big Australian bike events from April. Justin takes the Melbourne Roobaix challenge, and Ben Elliott of RTR FM sends us a special report about the Australian Cycle Messenger Championships in Perth. Thanks Ben, and thanks Justin!
We catch up with two intrepid cyclists - one of whom has Type 1 Diabetes - who are about to take on the world record for altitude ascent by bike. Gavin Wright and Hugh Harvey tell us of their plans to conquer a 6891-metre-high South American peak later this year and share tales of their previous exploits in the high Andes. Plus a preview of the Australasian Cycling History Conference, to be held in Melbourne from April 17-19. Not to mention all the usual cycling tidbits... Get your heart started with Along For The Ride!
