John Smithson, British film and television producer who was in town for the recent Australian International Documentary Conference, swung by to talk about his latest production Sherpa.  Sherpa is screening now.

Film historian Dean Brandum came in to talk about his upcoming lecture on Italian Cinema in Australia at the National Film and Sound Archive in Australia as part of the Ricketts Collection of Italian Cinema.  The season runs from April 8 - 10.

Michael Helms talked about the upcoming Fitzroy Film Fair and upcoming screenings at the Cinemaniacs Film Society.  And if you're interested in cinema stuff and stuff about cinemas locally, check out Michael's Technicolour Yawn blog.

About the Show

 

Film Buff's Forecast is a 2-hour weekly program devoted to the world of film.  The show has been a RRR staple since beginning in its current format back in 1981.  Regular reviewers include Mark Hartley, Nick Matteo, Simone Ubaldi, Gary Hillberg, Brian McFarlane, Michael Helms, Peter Kemp, Tanya Farley and Paul Byrne.

Paul has been the Director of the St Kilda Film Festival since 1999, is the author of two books - The Film Buff's DVD Companion (Text Publishing) and Not Quite Hollywood Handbook (Madman Publishing) - and has worked as an occasional actor - Dogs In Space (1987) , Nirvana St Murders (1990), Love And Other Catastrophes (1996).  He also works as a script editor, historian and lecturer.

Happy Easter Peeps! On today's show we spoke to the Gourmet Farmer Matthew Evans, owner of Fat Pig Farm in Tasmania. He's just released a new book called Not Just Jam that covers all kind of preserves, and we discussed the origins of preserved goods and why they are still relevant despite modern food technologies.

We then were joined by Melbourne-based French Chef Florent Gerardin, who chatted about his time working in kitchens alongside Joel Robuchon, Alain Ducasse, Shannon Bennett, and Mark Best amongst others. He is opening a new restaurant in Flinders Lane called Oter, and we spoke about how the new space is coming together and what they'll be serving. It's opening around April 11, so swing past and have a look.

Joining Dr Shane, Dr Ray, Dr Lauren and Chris KP In the studio this week is Dr Jason Dutton, Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science at La Trobe University, about his work that will help lead to more practical use of Hydrogen as a fuel. The team also discuss minimal synthetic cells, nanotechnology for self-cleaning clothes, a fish (cryptotora) that walks like land vertibrates do, and new insights into how the brain processes fear.

Dr Shane and Peter Aylward (president of the Space Association of Australia, Inc) interview NASA Astronaut Captain Gene Cernan, ahead of his visit to Australia and screenings of the movie about his story, “Last Man on the Moon”.
