The studio seemed a little empty for today's show, as Cam was in Bendigo as part of this year's Festival of Lamb, which is itself a part of the Australian Sheep and Wool Show; the largest of its type in the world. Nevertheless we pressed on, starting out with a market report from John at the Vic Market (including a rather cracking eggplant recipe). We spent the bulk of the show talking to Chris Forbes-Ewan from Australia's Defense Science and Technology Organisation. Armies are only functional if their troops are fed, and we spoke about the history of defence force food since WWII. We've come a long way from Bully Beef and rock hard biscuits, and the era of kitchen staff made up of the worth performing troops. We spoke about the different "menus" available to today's soldier, the development of efficient packaging, and how our food differs from other armed forces around the world. |

We catch up with Sean Willmore, founder and Director of The Thin Green Line, about his work to help protect nature's protectors on the dangerous frontlines of conservation. We'll talk about the upcoming World Ranger Day, and the special fundraiser for the TGL on 27 July at Fitzroy Town Hall. Then in in his series on wooden boards, this week Dr Surf will be talking with Grant Newby, surfer and shaper from Currumbin QLD about the upcoming Wooden Surfboards Show and Ride, to be held at Currumbin first weekend in August (4-5/8). This is a non-competitive, non-commercial gathering of wood surfboard makers and lovers which is held every year and attracts the top craftsmen from around Australia. These boards are true utilitarian works of art to be hung on walls and ridden when the swells are up - like they are now! If that wasn't already enough - we speak with author of 'Man in a Grey Suit' Glenn Orgias. In 2009 Glenn Orgias was an ordinary guy who worked in the city and loved to surf. Then he was attacked by a great white shark whilst surfing at Bondi beach and lost his hand in the attack. Glenn, who is now back surfing, talks about his book, and other current matters of debate and discussion, including whether shark nets are helping or hindering, the psychology of the surfer in waters with known dangers, and whether our respect for the shark has changed in recent times. |
