It's our last show for 2012! And who better to round out the year than the redoubtable Matt Preston, who's released a new cookbook called 100 Best Recipes. Given his day job involves thermomixers and blast chillers, the book is filled with simpler everyday recipes... cola-roast chicken, anyone? We also spoke about the changing dining culture in Sydney, our reluctance to eat certain ingredients (camel? insects?), and the fact in reality, chicken eggs are weird and freaky. Next up we had our final market report with John. Finally our good buddy Sebastian Reaburn joined us with what seemed like an endless array of Absinthe. You have to be very, very careful with Absinthe. Seriously. Approach with caution. We spoke about its origins as a tonic (!), the fact that many countries banned it in the early 20th century, and also how you need to be reeaaally careful. Also, don't forget that you need to be careful, it's the Speedball of liquor. Just be careful. OK? Thanks to all of this year's guests, helper-outers (especially Digger and Triple R stalwart Tim Thorpe), and most of all YOU; the fine folk who listen each week and make the show worth the effort! See you all in 2013. |

Dr Beach talks about a DNA barcode for easily identifying the plankton and seaweeds. Dr Surf reviews a a lavish new book 'The Great Ocean Road' from Rod Hyett. Plus a fab new exhibition at Surfworld, and a review of the free surf mag Smorgasboarder. And the second last dive report for the year. Crammed! |

We speak with Leo op den Brouw (Save Bastion Point - compulsory pre-reading on p23 of The Trip) on what's ahead over the summer months to Save Bastion Point. We talk about Monday's rally on the steps of Parliament House, and whether there's any hint of a Christmas gift from Minister Ryan Smith. John brings us some ideas for a Sustainable Seafood celebration. Which type of prawns should you buy and which should you avoid? Oysters? Fish? Whatever your feast and celebration may be at this time of year, John will give you the low-down so you can be sure it's a sustainable one. Brett gives us his final dive report for 2012. And we wrap up the year with what's on over summer, and what we reckon you should be purchasing for your nearest and dearest, and for yourselves, including the books we loved in 2012, and some sensational summer activities to keep you entertained until we return in 2013. |

To celebrate Human Rights Week, we have a bumper edition of the Right Now Radio Triple R podcast. Ben Schokman and Rachel Ball speak to Alex Pagliaro, refugee campaigner at Amnesty International about her recent trip to Nauru where she saw first hand the living conditions of asylum seekers sent to the island for off-shore processing. Can you imagine 400 men living in tents in an area the size of half a football field in 40 degree heat? Evelyn Tadros reports all the news and gossip from the 25th Australian Human Rights Commission awards at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney, including from James Spigelman's oration on where to draw the the line between hate speech and free speech. Ev also managed to chat with some of the nominees and award winners, including Benson Saulo, National Director for the Indigenous Australian Youth Leadership Academy, Katie Pashley, winner of the 2012 human rights photography award and the principal and students of Holroyd High School, nominees of the community organisation award. Finally, Jane Dixon talks to Ben and Rach about the funding crisis hitting Victorian Legal Aid and the likely impact of the changes to the VLA funding guidelines on access to justice and the rights to fair trial. Have a happy human rights weeek! |
