It's 100 years since the Model T Ford rolled off the production line. Dr Bernard Rolfe, Senior Lecturer School of Engineering and Information Technology at Deakin University, is part of a $1.8M research project between Deakin and Ford Australia investigating the use of advanced high strength steels in the automotive industry called the Model T2 Program. Bernard described his current research interests include developing better material models for metal forming, as well as investigating models for intelligent controllers for manufacturing systems. Also, a new loo for the ISS, potential progress with a malaria vaccine, the genetics of voting, reading a person's mind using fMRI, and making diamond films from tequila.

The Bureau of Meteorology Australian Weather Calendar is a much-anticipated annual event for meteorology and photography enthusiasts alike. The calendar features 12 photographs of striking weather events from around Australia along with paintings by Australian artists inspired by Australia's skies, land and water. We chat with Mark Jenkin and Mia Schoen from the BoM about producing the calendar and about weather in general. What are President-elect Barack Obama's thoughts on science funding? Listen to find out. Other stories were: heads-up-display contact lenses, humans' use of glass over the centuries, vale Prof Graeme Laver, and a book review - 'Do Polar Bears Get Lonely?'

Tracking the prevalence of disease-causing microbes is vitally important for community health. We spoke with Dr David Tribe from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne. David tracks dangerous bacteria and helps devise strategies to stop them causing disease epidemics. The Phoenix spacecraft will probably not survive the Martian polar winter. Back on Earth, mathematicians can apply for the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and take over from renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Revisiting the Miller-Urey experiment, the politics of forest conservation, unusual earthquakes, what it means to be a hypermiler, and Scotch tape produces X-rays!

The human brain has an amazing plasticity that sometimes allows it to overcome significant damage. We spoke with Dr. Norman Doidge who has written a remarkable book on the subject: "The Brain That Changes Itself", a collection of case histories detailing the astonishing progress of people whose neurological conditions had long been dismissed as hopeless. We also chatted with part-time jeweller Alison Alexander who takes inspiration from science. Alison brought examples of her science-inspired jewellery into the studio. Other stories were: the first Australian licence to clone human embryonic stem cells is granted, the LHC springs a helium leak, why flies can be so hard to swat (they see you coming and pre-plan their escape), and synthetic meat as an eco-friendly alternative to eating cows.

Stopping cancer cells from spreading through the body (metastasis) is vital in curing the patient of their cancer. Dr Bedrich Eckhardt from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre joined us in the studio to discuss his research. Bedrich studies the mechanisms by which breast cancer cells migrate to distant sites including lung and bone. Fossils found in Latvia turn out to be "missing links" - animals that were in the middle of the evolutionary process of transitioning from sea to land. Other stories were: the commercial cloning of pet dogs, methanol fuel cells for portable electronic devices, and drought-resistant GM wheat with higher yields than non-GM wheat.

After broaching the controversial topic of GM canola, EAGG spoke with two amazing guests. First guest was Simon Harrisson, a polymer chemist at CSIRO Molecular and Health Technologies. Simon is currently working on a project to make improved reverse osmosis membranes. Reverse osmosis is the process of forcing salty water through a semi-permeable membrane which allows the water to pass but not the salt and is very important for water desalination on both small and large scales. Second guest was Richard Chopping, a geophysicist from the Predictive Mineral Discovery Cooperative Research Centre. Geophysics is the area where geology and physics meet and aims to create an understanding of the earth by measuring the subtle changes that occur under the ground. This enables, amongst other things, the predictive discovery of hidden mineral deposits. The show was rounded off with a news story of genetically modified algae that produce hydrogen gas as a potential alternate energy source.

Which is the greater mystery, the breeding habits of the platypus or the workings of the human heart? Listen to our book review to find out. Also, why do animals use sex to reproduce when it's so much easier to use parthenogenesis for reproduction? Our studio guest explains. Other stories discussed were zoo animals as behavioural subjects, ancient T.rex collagen, failure of the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft and evolution of stomach ulcer-causing bacteria.

Did she earn her "Science Scout Badges"? Listen and find out. We also interviewed Susanna (PhD student researching Alpine ecology) and heard about what it sometimes takes to be a scientist - camping in wet and remote Alpine locations in order to monitor plots of native plants containing 1000's of seedlings! Other stories included umbilical cord blood banks, 100 year old light bulbs and H5N1 influenza in Indonesia.
