As part of National Science Week, EAGG ventured out into the fresh air for an outside broadcast at the Queen Victoria Market. We interviewed Dr. Richard Roush and Dr. Scott Watkins on how science is meeting the challenge of the world's growing food and energy needs. We also heard from mathematics populariser and author Dr. Clio Creswell, interacted with our live audience and finished off with a discussion on the age-old question â is it a fruit or a vegetable?

Today's show featured two more Fresh Scientists for 2008. We chatted with Catia Domingues on her worrying research that indicates our oceans are warming at a rate faster than was previously thought, and Dr Susan Angus about her research on silicon radio-frequency single electron transistors for quantum computers. There was a liquid theme to the science news for the week â Phoenix confirms water on Mars, Cassini confirms liquid hydrocarbon lakes on Titan, and oceanographers plan to dive 1.6km to the bottom of the Earth's deepest lake - Lake Baikal in Russia. Also, how would you convince someone to give you their seat on a crowded train? Listen to find out.

Fossils found in Latvia turn out to be "missing links" - animals that were in the middle of the evolutionary process of transitioning from sea to land. Other stories were: the commercial cloning of pet dogs, methanol fuel cells for portable electronic devices, and drought-resistant GM wheat with higher yields than non-GM wheat.

We heard from Kate Brennan, CEO of Federation Square in Melbourne, who told us all about the amazing sustainability measures that have been implemented at the venue. Next we spoke with Kate Phillips, science communicator and coordinating senior curator of the Science and Life Gallery at Museum Victoria. Kate discussed 'sustainability communication' â a similar but different art to science communication. Finally, we talked a little science and religion with Tom Middlebrook who is doing a show in the comedy festival called "Weird Science". Other stories were: Messenger's rendezvous with Mercury, and the launching of the carbon dioxide geosequestration project in south-western Victoria.

Is being a computer games researcher the ideal science job? Dr John Rankin, senior lecturer in games technology at La Trobe University's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, thinks so. John described how computer software is re-engaging our science students in the magic world of space science via serious games. Other stories were: memory loss ("baby brain" effect) in pregnant women is real but there's also good news, the Doomsday Seed Vault and seeds in general, first evidence of an under-ice volcanic eruption in Antarctica, investing in rainforest, and busting the myth that people who wear glasses are stereotypical geeks or nerds.

After broaching the controversial topic of GM canola, EAGG spoke with two amazing guests. First guest was Simon Harrisson, a polymer chemist at CSIRO Molecular and Health Technologies. Simon is currently working on a project to make improved reverse osmosis membranes. Reverse osmosis is the process of forcing salty water through a semi-permeable membrane which allows the water to pass but not the salt and is very important for water desalination on both small and large scales. Second guest was Richard Chopping, a geophysicist from the Predictive Mineral Discovery Cooperative Research Centre. Geophysics is the area where geology and physics meet and aims to create an understanding of the earth by measuring the subtle changes that occur under the ground. This enables, amongst other things, the predictive discovery of hidden mineral deposits. The show was rounded off with a news story of genetically modified algae that produce hydrogen gas as a potential alternate energy source.

Monash University engineers are using tiny earthquakes and tornados to assist in the detection of biohazards and germ warfare. We interviewed Leslie Yeo and heard how he employs sound waves travelling along the surface of the credit card-sized chip to make detection easier by aggregating trace amounts of dangerous micro-organisms into a small volume. How and why do birds sing? We found out! Other stories included: using eyes for identification, why raw garlic is good for you, Star Trek cast members honoured with asteroids, and non-native birds may be vital for the survival of native Hawaiian plants.

Our guest was Fleur Tynan, a graduate student from Monash University's Protein Crystallography Unit. Fleur described her amazing research that involves determining the 3D structure of proteins on the surface of the cells of our immune system. Knowing the structure of these proteins helps to determine how the immune system functions by interacting with invading viruses. Have you ever wondered how plasma TV screens work? Listen to find out. Other stories were: genome transplants, why deep voices are sexy, a gene for tree strength, and nano-sized tweezers.

We spoke with Peter Delaney who is one of the recent Clunies Ross Award winners. Peter described his 20 year effort to re-engineer large sophisticated bench-top laser microscopes into tiny versions that can fit on the end of minimally invasive endoscopes for medical procedures. This week's report delved into the mysteries of animal sleep. News stories featured fossils of Australia's largest dinosaurs, how to remember by forgetting and bullet proof vests made of polyethylene.

Do we have stories of wacky and zany scientific research? Of course we do, listen in for some examples. The environment is changing in ways we cannot predict - what does this "no analogue future" mean for our attempts to model climate change and its effects on ecosystems? Other featured stories were: carnivorous sponges from the Southern Ocean, using bees to study the evolution of immunity, and the gene that gave human brains the edge.

Also on the show: research has suggested that northern Europeans might have been dark-skinned until as recently as 6000 years ago, the first marsupial genome sequence has been completed, iPods may cause pacemakers to malfunction, and a section of the Earth's crust in the mid-Atlantic is missing!
