Eat It - 1 July 2012

Happy new financial year everyone! After a brief interlude discussing cauliflower and latkes potatoes, we were joined in the studio by nutritionalist Cinzia Cozzolino. We spoke about why winter is important, why it's a good and healthy idea to eat food that's actually in season (duh!), and how it's quite normal to "fatten up" for winter. And don't be scared of brussels sprouts. Go on. Try them again. Cooked properly, they are awesome winter food.

We also had a very quick chat to Nathanial Powell from Greenpeace about the imminent arrival of FV Margiris, the largest fishing trawler ever to visit Australian waters. Whilst Australia's fisheries are amongst the most regulated in the world the Margiris in our seas could be troubling, simply because there are no longer enough fish left in the areas it's aleady been working in. Greenpeace suggests the situation is very simple: you can't cheat nature by removing an increasing number of fish and expect those resources to be there forever.

We finished up sipping a Koala Stinger mixed by The Lui Bar's Sebastian Reaburn. The next in his occasional series on the history of spirits, today we focussed on Brandy. We spoke about its history as a "gentleman's drink", its various forms including cognac, and how as well as drinking it's very useful for cooking. But don't join the pretentious folk who insist it needs to be warmed in the glass as you drink it; that's more about showing off your expensive glasses than it is about improving the brandy.
